Bobbie says: "This is secretly my favorite luau on Maui. I say secretly because I sometimes hesitate to recommend it to my clients, who I feel probably have a beach setting in mind for their Maui luau experience.
If you don't mind getting off the beach and want to check out something a bit different, this luau offers an amazing tropical setting at the Maui Tropical Plantation, excellent cultural demonstrations, and entertainment that is truly a cut above the rest.
In my view, this luau does the best job - even better than (dare I say it?) the world-famous Old Lahaina Luau - of making you feel like you've been transported to an earlier, unspoiled Hawaii. That said, if your idea of a perfect luau is on the beach at sunset, look elsewhere."
King Kamehameha II is credited with originating the luau in 1819, when he hosted the first feast that abolished the ancient Hawaiian practice of men and women eating their meals apart. This lavish celebration where the King ate with women was a symbolic act which ended the ancient Hawaiian religious tabus, and was accompanied by traditional dancing and demonstrations of skill.
Luaus & Hawaiian Cultural Activities
If you're visiting Hawaii, attendance at a luau is practically required! (Would you visit New York City without seeing a Broadway show?) Luaus offer some of the best Hawaiian-style food and Polynesian entertainment to be found anywhere, and are a great way to experience the spirit of aloha and ho'okipa (hospitality) that characterize the Hawaiian culture.
A luau is not appealing to you, but you want to experience Hawaiian culture?
